Abstract:

Let equ1be a branching process in which each individual reproduces independently of the others and has probability equ2of giving rise to j descendants in the following generation. The random variable equ3is the number of individuals in the mth generation. It is assumed that equ4. Denote by equ5the total progeny, equ6, the time of extinction, and equ7, the total number of ancestors of all the individuals in the process. This paper deals with the distributions of the random variables equ8, equ9and equ10under the condition that equ11and determines the asymptotic behavior of these distributions in the case where equ12and equ13in such a way that equ14tends to a finite positive limit.
