Abstract:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology has been applied to solve transport problems giving rise to a number of specialized systems (GIS-T). These systems need data on the road network as well as socioeconomic data. The small area statistics that will result from the Census of 1991, which the National Bureau of Statistics is preparing (Munistat), will allow its inclusion in GIS and also its use in transport planning models, namely in a growing number of Municipalities. A segment based geocoding system, in study, is willing at approaching data from administrative files to census units and the transport network, allowing a number of transport problems to be solved with more accurate data.
