Development of decision support systems (DSS) that include biophysical simulation for the purpose of aiding natural resource management is a relatively new, but rapidly growing scientific endeavour. Biophysical simulation models are the foundation of natural resource DSS. These models serve as formal representations of the essential elements of a system. As such, a simulation model is an abstraction for, not an exact replica of, the intricacies of a real system.
