The term ‘decision support system’ is contemporary jargon for an integrated approach to the age-old problem of helping people make better decisions. Decision support systems (DSS) can ecompass methodologies as diverse as hard-core computer models, expert systems, geographic information systems, discussion groups, and structured thought processes. They often appear as computer programs but can be based on paper, videos, or emanate from human beings themselves. They may be used by an individual or assist group interactions. DSS are being used in many walks of life. However, they are particularly appropriate for helping with the management of the world’s grazed ecosystems because they bring an integrated approach to bear on complex problems.
